Many people are attracted to the idea of running an internet business. Start up costs are very low, and almost anybody who can send an email and edit a simple document can get started! And we do hear about big winners, those who get to give up their commutes and bosses, and who get to enjoy running their own business. But the sad truth is that most of the people who attempt to prosper online do not make it that far. I have my own experiences and opinions about why this is so, but lets explore the current state of the internet.

I have been working on the net for about eight years, and I have to admit that the competition is stronger then ever. I base most of my business upon getting good search engine rankings on competitive and profitable search terms. It certainly takes more research to find gems that are not saturated with thousands of other websites. However, those gems still do exist. And just because a lot of other websites are competing for a search term does not mean that those websites are well optimized, and that I still cannot get my page listed far up in the results of the major search engines.

And now, to make up for the increased number of websites that are competing for surfers on the net, there are also a lot more surfers! Almost everybody, from kids to senior citizens, knows how to surf the net. This was not the case at the beginning of the decade when the internet was much less user friendly and reliable, and access was certainly a lot slower!

So many great tools have been published so that a novice can have a pretty good website running in a few minutes, even though I believe that becoming a great webmaster takes years of testing and experience. And just as it does not take any special high tech skills to build a website these days, it also does not take a bundle of money. In fact, the most popular blogging platforms, are free!

It is also easy for webmasters to find website sponsors, Affiliate programs usually have few requirements beyond a website and a quick registration. Thousands of affiliate programs cover almost every topic one could imagine. And all it takes to start making money is signing up and dropping a snip of code on a website!

So this brings us back to the first question. Why do so many internet marketers fail? I lay some of the blame on the hundreds of ebooks and so-called home business opportunities with names like Internet ATM or Easy Web Profits. While I love working online because it lets me run my own show, succeed according to my efforts, and express my creative side, the last thing I would call this business is easy.

I get to choose the projects I will work on, but I always research them before I start. Even so, I have to cut some very interesting websites loose because they did not return the results that I needed in order to keep the lights on around here. But I always have several projects in the works, and I can concentrate on the 30% of my websites that make me a good return. So, what I am saying here, is that I fail about 70% of the time.

I also expect to put in a full day of work. I do not expect to put up a website and have it magically make money. I spend my time promoting my websites, testing my pages, and then tweaking my results until my efforts either bear fruit or I decide to put them on the shelf for that some day when I have more time. I know lots of other internet marketers too, and the ones that really make their living on the net always laugh at the idea that this job does not require any work.

For all your Video Search Engine, Watch Prison Break and Find Friends

When you’re building an online business the last thing you want to do is spend your time manually creating html or php files for your website. That’s the main reason why content management systems have become so popular. They make it easier for you to focus on getting good solid content online. In the beginning getting a content management system was very expensive. That has changed. Today you can get many good, free content management systems for free.

The main advantage of a content management system is undoubtedly they allow users without any technical know-how to publish content on the web. You don’t have to dig deep in your pockets to get acontent management system up and running these days. There are plenty of good free content management system on the market today. Some of the most popular systems are Joomla and Mambo, however, I feel that I also have to mention CMSimple, which really is simple.

Did you know that:
CMSimple is a content management system that doesn’t even require a database.

In today’s web2.0 world I would be doing you a disservice by not mentioning the ever popular blogging systems like Wordpress or Drupal. Most people do not consider them to be proper content management systems. Although they are not content management systems in the traditional sense they work in much the same way. I like to think of them as highly specialized content management systems.

Joomla is a great content management system, no doubt about that. The best thing about it for someone starting a business is that it’s free to use as long as you stick to the license. That’s not the only advantage though. Because it’s free and because it’s a really good system it has a very strong following. That means that there are a lot of people out there spending a lot of time creating joomla templates. Some are free and some you have to pay for, but unless you know how to create a joomla template that looks professional it’s going to be a lot cheaper to download or buy a ready made joomla template.

Since using a content management system has become so popular it would be fair to assume that setting them up would be easy. For those with technical skills it probably is, but if you do not have those skills it can be quite a challenge. In fact that is probably the one thing that keeps the greatest number of people from ever getting a content management system off the ground. Fortunately, however, there are a lot of people offering guides and courses on how to install joomla and other content management systems You’re unlikely to get that service for free though.

So what’s the bottom line on using joomla and other content management systems?

If you don’t have any technical skills you will probably have to spend a bit of cash, however, it is still highly likely to be far less expensive than getting a web professional to do the job for you. You definitely do not need to solicit the services of a web development company. That will likely cost you thousands of dollars. Why do that when you can get your website, with a content management system, off the ground for less than $100.

Content management systems are tools that let you create web site content and administer web site content on a recurring basis. content management systems allows you to focus on content development and not web site development.

In the web 2.0 world web content isn’t just about text anymore. Web content can be basically anything ranging from articles, pictures, products, email archives, Flash presentations, streaming audio, to basically anything else you can think of. Any content management system worth its salt will provide you with the tools to publish all that.

In the past you could end up spending hours updating your website. Then you had to make sure everything was working like it was supposed to. With modern content management systems that is not a problem anymore. These systems allow you to focus on the content of your website.

Mike Nielsen is a web developer from Denmark dedicated to providing tools for other aspiring web developers and others aspiring to make a living online. At Web Construction he provides numerous resources to that end.

When you create a web-site, at some stage in that development, you will need to find content to offer your visitors. The content needs to be factual and something that will help them. This can come in the form of videos, articles, e-books, software, a newsletter, in fact the list goes on, but you get the idea.

Now when it comes to creating content, you have a couple of choices: You can either create it yourself (or hire someone to create it for you) OR you can buy the rights to some previously created content.

Creating content yourself ensures that your content is totally unique, but it can be expensive to produce and certainly takes a lot of time and effort to do.

For a number of reasons, I recommend that you have some PLR and MRR material on your site. The main reason is that you can very quickly create a sizeable offer on your site, without that cost and labour intensivity.

The other main reason I s that PLR books can be a great source of inspiration for your UNIQUE articles. Simply cut and paste the various sections of the book and create separate articles. If no one else has done this to that particular book, then you have just scored around 30 totally unique articles, for a fraction of the price you would have had to pay.

You can also use the PLR content as the sprat to catch mackerel and I know of a lot of Internet Marketers who are busy building their list doing exactly that on e-bay.

One word of warning when purchasing PLR; make sure you know what you are buying. PLR means Private Label Rights and effectively gives you the authority to do what you want with the content, even branding it as your own.

Resell Rights are something totally different and in fact just give you the right to sell the product
as is. Master Resell Rights (MRR) allow you to sell the product AND to sell the rights to sell that product. So, be clear on the rights you are buying, you can get into a lot of trouble if you get it wrong.

One final word of caution, when purchasing PLR and MRR content, buyer beware!! There is a lot of rubbish out there and if you buy old, out dated content then the value in those products will already have evaporated.

If you would like to harness the power of word of mouth marketing for your web-site, then sign up for Allen’s viral marketing newsletter and 366 free internet marketing tips and secrets for superb unadvertised bonuses.

Google Webmaster Tools says that in order to gain Page Rank (a way of gaging website authority, PR is gaged from 0-10, 10 being highest) you should have high quality sites linking to yours, which is termed a backlink. A backlink is simply a link to your website from another website.

There are several types of link building strategies and all of them should be utilized to optimize your sites for the search engines which in turn will increase our traffic, so build links everyday

1. Relevant/Reciprocal Link Exchange

Reciprocal links are where you exchange links with sites that are relevant to yours. AS far as Google is concerned relevance equals quality as far as a backlink is concerned.

There are some webmasters who exchange links with any and all sites. But if you have a website about weight loss, how helpful is it for your visitors to see a link to a car auction site? This is a weak link and a useless waste of time and looks lame on your website! Build links for your visitors and not for ranks and your site will be rewarded.

The two most important factors in finding reciprocal link exchange partners are relevance and Page Rank, relevance being first important and page rank second. If you can get both then that’s great. If you’re site is new higher rank pages are hard to get, so don’t worry about it and just look for relevance.

Where you place links on your site is important and can be done in several ways. While many still use a links page, this method is not the best option. These days search engines place less value on links pages and when you think about it, how good is a links page for your site and its visitors?

A better option is to place your links and get the reciprocal site to place links as hyperlinks within the content on your site with relevant anchor keywords. This method looks better, provides a natural flow of links and gets more link juice from the search engines and especially Google.

The key to link building on your sites is to make the link look like a side effect and not the end goal.

2. One Way Links

A one-way link is where you get a link to your site from another site without having to place a link back. Of course, one-way links hold the most juice with search engines.

When your site is new it is unlikely that you will get relevant high PR sites to give you a one-way link, unless of course you provide great content or a link bait (explained below).

Natural One-Way Link Building through Content

One of the best ways to get one way links is the natural link method which can be obtained by posting fresh original content on your sites that is so good it makes other websites want to link to it. Good content, which should all ready be a first priority for your visitors and visitor retention, will facilitate natural one-way links.

Link Bait

Another great way to build one way backlinks is to use a link bait on your site. This is the method of choice to get get higher page rank sites to link to lower page rank sites. Link Bait is basically any content or feature within a website that somehow baits viewers to place links to it from other websites. These link baits could be, information hooks, news hooks, humor hooks, tools hooks like a widget or some helpful tool that other sites can use.

Article Marketing and submitting your sites to Internet Directories are very effective ways to get one-way links.

3. 3-Way Links

3-ways: Site A points to Site B and Site B points to Site C and Site C points back to Site A. The point is to try to make reciprocals look like one-ways, this method really doesn’t have much value and I don’t recommend it.

4. Outbound Links

Outbound links are the websites you link to or site as references within content. Whatever your niche there authority and other helpful sites for your visitors and and those are the sites that you want to link to.

Some webmasters are so afraid of losing traffic or giving up their link juice that you hardly ever see outbound links on their sites, this is a big mistake.

Outbound links are a necessary part of establishing your authority within your niche and a vital part of your Internet Marketing efforts. They are a vital part of any website/blog and their existence or non-existence can determine whether high-authority, high page rank sites would ever link to you, mainly because if you are not consistently seeking out new information and intelligence within your niche and citing those sources they will view your website as stale and out of date.

Take a look at the authority sites within your niche, they all have outbound links and references. It is impossible to provide really useful information without offering other sites that can benefit your visitors.

In conclusion, it is crucial for any Internet Marketing Campaign to build links everyday. This is the main way that Google can establish authority, relevance and importance to your websites and is at the center of the search engine optimization strategy.

While surfing the net over the weekend I landed on a couple of websites that reminded me of the importance of a good landing page. I clicked on these sites because the Title and Description in search results promised to provide what I was looking for, but once I landed there, all hope was gone.

I could not find a hint of what was promised and on one of the sites I had to navigate through at least 50 units of Adsense before seeing a glimpse of relevant information, and I quickly clicked off and moved on.

The landing page is so crucial for visitor retention, not to mention their return. A landing page is the page that visitors first land on when visiting your site either from search results, or from any links to your site. Usually it’s the home page, but it’s actually any page that is linked to and from where visitors can get to your website.

Also, it is important to realize that while we, who are webmasters, understand websites and navigation on a deeper level, you always have to assume that your visitors are complete novices and they need obvious and clear indication of what your site is about, what’s there and how to find what their looking for.

The landing page is really the “first impression” of your site and its content. What is on your landing page?

Ask yourself these questions:

1. Is your website clearly defining what you are offering?

2. Is there some kind of welcome message or post that explains what’s there?

3. When visitors land on your page, are they easily able to navigate to different sections and pages within your site?

4. Is the content reflective of the title and description?

5. When they land, are they met with valuable relevant information or do they have to muddle through a ton of adds, like Google Adsense and banners?

If you answered NO to any of these questions then you will have problems with keeping your visitors and obviously they will not return.

Remember that the Internet revolves around the ease of getting information, if a surfer has to jump through a thousand hoops to find what their looking for on your website, believe me, they will not, and why should they? There are millions of other sites where they will find what their looking for with ease.

This is especially true for bloggers, I surfed about a hundred blogs this weekend and found many whose landing pages were just awful. One of which was a high traffic guru blog.

Because blogs do not usually have the same navigation layout as websites, instead of pages they have posts, they should be even more diligent in the landing page layout and navigation; because posts are THE content of a blog and they should be placed at a top spot, with a proper header, like All Posts or Recent Posts where individual post titles are listed for easy access and navigation. A visitor shouldn’t have to spend half an hour looking for posts and believe me they will not.

Don’t let a bad landing page and navigation set-up affect your online business and Internet marketing efforts.

While the internet has perhaps been oversold as a place to do business, there are some ways in which the online world has proven to be a great place for your business to grow.

First off, you’re going to need a website for your business. This can work as a clearing house for customer service functionality, information on your products or services and so on, more so than a way of finding clientele. You can place useful features such as FAQ on your site, which are then accessible whether or not it is during your office hours. There is also the option of restricting part of your site to clients or subscribers; this will create the impression of added value to your site.

Whether your business is bricks and mortar or entirely online, this is a strategy which can perform well for you. For example, if you are a restaurant or catering company, the members only portion of your website could offer recipes, if your company is in the hat business then fashion tips may be called for. Special offers for members can and should be included as well. You can create an area on your website which serves to promote the advantages of membership to new clients. You should of course add the address of your site to all of your marketing and promotional materials.

Next, you need to collect the contact information (in this case, email addresses) from customers and other visitors to your website.

Having these email address organized in the form of a lost makes marketing easy. You can send out information, newsletters and offers to your list any time you like.

To give you an idea of what you can do with an email list, let’s suppose that you have a kitchen and bath business. You might send these sorts of emails to your list:
1) Information on switching to marble or granite countertops
2) Cabinet suggestions
3) A special price on plumbing fixtures
4) Tips on evaluating cabinet materials
5) Information on new products offered by your business

No matter what business you are in or what product or service you are selling, you can use this technique.

Third, use the media to get your business more exposure. Write press releases to accomplish this. Keep these brief, easy to read and attention getting. Be sure to include your website address by way of a referral for more information.

All media outlets have an online presence as well these days. Since the media is after all run by human beings, there is a tendency toward laziness – and this can work for you. The media like being able to get a story without having to leave their desk (wouldn’t you?). You can take the extra step of writing many of these news articles about your business and placing them on your site, with the media being invited to download and reprint them.

To sum up here: Don’t expect miracles from the internet – and there are many who will try to overhype its potential in the hopes of selling you something. Don’t sink all of your savings into the web; use traditional marketing and advertising routes to their full advantage, but DO use the internet too as a part of your overall marketing strategy. Start learning about how to do business online, build a site for your business and try your hand at some of the techniques I’ve laid out in this article. Walk, don’t run to the internet and design a strategy to integrate the virtual world into your business.

There are many different ways to get traffic to a website or blog today. Some of these are more effective than others, but certainly targeted traffic is the best traffic you can get today. One way to do that is to use an RSS feed where people can easily subscribe to your content on your blog.

In this article let’s talk about how using an RSS feed to build traffic to your site is a very smart thing to do.

The definition of an RSS feed is it is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated digital content, such as blogs, news feeds or podcasts. One thing that is without dispute today on the Internet is your visitors want to be in control when they arrive at your site. You can make this possible by allowing them to post comments in your blog, to watch audio and video online, to allow them to subscribe to an e-mail newsletter if you have one, or your RSS feed.

By providing content that is interesting, and then allowing your visitor to opt in to an RSS feed you are allowing them to be in control building potential repeat traffic. One of the most important things you can do when it comes to getting traffic is to concentrate on getting repeat traffic.

Repeat traffic is free traffic in that people will come back on their own when they feel you have something of importance to them. This is really what an RSS feed does. It should be mutually beneficial.

It allows you to offer fresh content that is interesting and relevant, and to keep your website traffic up to date on any new developments that you have.

RSS feeds do not have to be limited strictly to blogs either. People can receive new content to you via article feeds, discussion forum posts, updates on any specials or discounts, and various other ways you choose to use them.

One definite benefit of an RSS feed over e-mail marketing is avoiding spam complaints. Publishers of website content and blog content can easily keep in contact with people once they describe to your RSS feed, because there is no delivery problems.

If you are trying to be increased traffic to your site, then using an RSS feed is definitely something you need to be doing. It is very easy to set up and the benefits as we have listed, are great for building your online business.

There are many topics that are hotly debated on the internet, but one of the most hotly debated topics in internet marketing and online business is website convdrsion. It’s not enough to get traffic to your site; you also want to make sure that you’re driving targeted visitors to your site.

Although there are many ways to do this, here are three tips that will help you improve your conversion.

1. Target the right keywords.

When optimizing your site for the search engines, you need to make sure that you choose the keywords that apply specifically to the topic of your website. Do your research. Find out what others are looking for on your topic, choose your keywords and then optimize your site for those keywords. This will help your visitors find you.

If you have a one page sales letter, this is a little bit harder because you want your copy to sell your product. You can still optimize your header tags with the right keywords, description and title, and do your best to weave your keywords into your sales page.

2. Target the appropriate market.

The other day I was surfing the internet looking for crochet patterns. I found a site that looked like what I was looking for and clicked the link.

The first thing that pops up when I get to the page is a dialog box telling me that the site had just given my computer a virus. It didn’t take long for me to figure out why when I looked at the page and realized it was an advertisement for an adult site. I healed the virus and quickly clicked away.

Now I know there are those online who are looking for this kind of stuff. Adult sites are big business. However, I am not, and as soon as I’m redirected to this type of site through a disguised redirect link, I click away.

Don’t make your visitors hate you. Give them what they are searching for. Black hat techniques work for awhile, but it’s only temporary. Don’t waste your time or money marketing to those who aren’t interested in what you sell.

3. Decide what it is you want your visitors to do when they visit your site.

Although my main website is a content site, the first thing I want visitors to do is to subscribe to my list. That’s the reason I have a short sales letter there to persuade visitors to subscribe to my list.

The reason is that it’s much easier to raise your conversions if you market multiple times to your visitors. The more times you expose your visitors to what you offer, the more likely they are to buy. With each email you send, you are building credibility. The secret here is to give your new subscribers more information to help them make more informed choices.

Whether your website is a sales letter or a content site, write good content. Check your spelling and grammar. Write headlines that explain your offers and make your visitors want to read your copy. This will improve your chance at a sale.
