Most of us have heard about the benefits of eating certain kinds of seaweed. But recently, scientists have discovered a type of carotenoid called Fucoxanthin that is being haled as the new miracle food. It’s an antioxidant that experts believe promotes weight loss, and can even help to treat diabetes and cancer.

Fucoxanthin is found in wakame and hijiki, two kinds of brown seaweed, as well as some forms of red and green seaweed. This is the same seaweed that consumers find wrapped around most of their sushi rolls. At one billion years old, wakame is one of the oldest types of ocean plants ever discovered that still exist today. Asians have been consuming it for thousands of years and visibly benefit from it.

Some animal testing in labs has determined that Fucoxanthin will help treat diabetes in the near future. The supplement can diminish insulin and blood glucose levels by promoting the development of DHA in the body. Rich in vitamin C, beta-carotene, riboflavin, vitamin B12 and B6, among others, wakame is a very wholesome food. Although it’s tempting to go to your local sushi bar and load up on sushi and sea weed salad, it is important to know that sea weed actually contains fairly large amounts of iodine as well. Consuming large portions of it can lead to iodine poisoning which can harm the thyroids.

While this does not mean that eating seaweed is unsafe, it is much safer to get Fucoxanthin in the form of a pill or supplement rather than gorge yourself on Japanese food. There seems to be no known negative side effect of taking Fucoxanthin as a dietary supplement.

How Twitter is Destroying Your Mind

It’s called parsing. It means that you cannot think of anyone or anything over 140 characters long. Each letter, number, punctuation point and space counts as a character. Twitter rules as well as destroys.

As you probably have heard around the coffee shop, Twitter is now being blamed for causing America to go mindless. Buy hey, come on, how can Twitter be responsible for the pre-Twitter status quo?

Blame is easy because Twitter is a newbie on the street corner of interactive Web 2.0 sites. One simply logs onto Twitter and it’s free expression as long as it’s 140 characters or less.

Now realistically it is not fair, though admittedly very convenient, to blame America’s total lack of attention and focus on Twitter. It’s not Twitter’s fault this is an election year.

Twitter is simply software that just sits there until one enters their 140 characters or less, regardless of who is running for President.

But it’s all worth it in the end because the Twitter community has a steady stream of new members; many of whom just might become your Followers. Followers are a type of fan and you are the Followed. So to speak or rather twitter.

The truth is, like many Web 2.0 unwritten “givens” if one Follows you, you should respectfully Follow them back.

Whether you actually do Follow or not is not really the point, it’s Web 2.0 courtesy to respond in kind. Be nice or leave.

Of course one should morally Follow back out of courtesy so that more folks don’t jump off the Golden Gate Bridge; imagine the trauma of Twitter rejection.

But just because one Follows, doesn’t actually mean one follows, in Twitter terms of course.

There’s no getting around it. How truly embarrassing when one goes back over the archives!

Some poor soul thinks they are carrying on some sort of dialogue with you and it’s clear you are taking off wherever you wish totally ignoring them and everything else: my gosh, what must they all be thinking? Or rather, twittering?

Are they somehow subliminally twittering with me? One eventually starts to wonder: what is really going down here?

But whatever you do, don’t lose control because you committed a downright ugly Twitter indiscretion. You know, something you are afraid might pop up on you-know-who’s Google search.

But if you do sin, one of the Twitter strategies for covering up your indiscretion is simply moving on. Or in other words, bury it in the archives.

Twittering away with goofy and silly nonsense does wonders for burying the Twitter where you called your boss an infected scab. And worse.

But no worries, in the end Twitter is all so stylishly superficial anyway. If there is any Twitter style that has emerged, it is the cutesy superficial style.

That is probably because every California valley girl twitters night and day but of course that’s how they talk as well as Twitter.

If you like Search, Twitter has a good search function but with billions of Twitters it’s like getting 10,000 hits on a search.

And since so many Twitters are twatter, it’s sort of like ‘what’s the point?’ One can only assume some sort of alternative self therapy involved with these Twitter search freaks…

Which seems strange since the original idea was for your friends to know what you are thinking and doing every minute of the day.

It seems even stranger if you are married, but remember you too were once young and for some reason were once interested in those sorts of things.

Besides, how important can your thoughts while doing laundry really be?

The answer is not really important at all and that best describes the real strength of Twitter; it’s artificial and not very important at all.

It’s contrived except for those that already think in Twitter. So for those folks relatively speaking, they are twittering but really not in Twitter terms of course.

If it sounds too complex it’s really not. Twittering requires only superficial usage of scattered parts of the brain and very quickly you will notice numerous Twitterers that do not express any sort of thought whatsoever.

They have a hope that someday a miracle will happen.

It’s sort of like “hi, I’m here trying to think, not much yet in terms of results but will keep on trying and keep you posted or rather twittered should I actually think something.”

That’s because recent research showed some 87% of we Twitterers have less than a two second attention span.

Call it parsing or call it scatterbrained but the reality is a society hooked on Twitter and Sudoku is a society with way too much free time on its hands. And that spells big trouble.

But on the upside, even though we really aren’t important, we can impress other unimportant people that we are in fact important because we Twitter.

In global terms, we should be thankful. Twitter is showing us a very important and revealing aspect of our humanity: a mind is not necessary for self expression. Or, as we say out here in California, “No es necessario!”

So go ahead, feel free to exercise your mindless self expression. Go ahead, Twitter me, I dare ya!

Think about it, if you didn’t have a belief that you would be hurt if you jumped from a tall building, then you would not feel motivated to be alert. If you did not believe that the gnawing sensation in your stomach meant that you were hungry, you would not feel motivated to eat.

When it comes to giving up the cigarette addiction, people who smoke need to feel a lot of motivation to make the DECISION to quit. Motivation is based on the ideas that we believe. So you will need to figure out exactly what ideas would motivate you if you believed them. Because when you feel powerfully motivated, you will quit smoking.

Thanks to NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) and hypnosis for motivation, it’s much easier to learn how to believe these new ideas than you think it is. However, you don’t believe the ideas that will motivate you to quit smoking at this point, or you would have already quit smoking cigarettes.

For the purpose of this discussion, we need to define a few words.

DOUBT: Uncertain/distrustful/dubious - “maybe it’s this way, and maybe it is not.”

BELIEF: Trust/faith/tenet - A state of mind devoid of all doubt. In other words, belief means, “this is the way that it is.”

HIGHLY VALUED CRITERIA: What is most important to you, as an individual human being.

When you believe that if you continue to smoke your highly valued criterion is jeopardized, you will feel the motivation that you require to break your smoking addiction. We call this a negative motivator, because it’s a belief that motivates by giving you bad sensations. Negative motivators are great for getting you to make decisions and changes in your life.

When you believe that if you do quit smoking, your highly valued criteria will become enhanced, you will also feel the motivation that you require to quit smoking. This is a positive motivator, because it motivates you by promising good feelings if you quit smoking.

The first assignment is for you to figure out what the most essential aspects of your life are. Your most highly valued criteria are usually intangibles. For example: Money would not be highly valued criteria, but the freedom, fun, or security that money can purchase would be. Write your list of highly valued criteria down on a piece of paper.

Next you need to DECIDE what you would need to believe to feel motivated to break the habit. Here is the good news, sort of: Logic has nothing to do with belief. Things don’t have to be logical for a person to believe them. As a matter of fact, they rarely are. So do not worry about logic!

The format for your negative motivator beliefs will be: “I believe that if I continue to smoke, something horrible will happen to my most highly valued criteria.”

Make sure that you frame your motivators in the positive. In other words, always state what you want or what will happen. Never state what will not happen. Eliminate the “not” word from the beliefs.

In this example we will say that your children’s welfare is your most highly valued criteria.

WRONG: “I believe that if I continue to smoke, I won’t be doing my kid’s health any good.”

CORRECT: “I believe that if I continue to smoke, my secondhand smoke will make my children sick.”

Next, create a list of positive motivators. “I believe that if I quit smoking: (something very important will be enhanced).”

WRONG: “I believe that if I stop smoking, I won’t make my kids sick.”

CORRECT: “I believe that if I quit smoking, my kids will be safe because I will eliminate their exposure to the dangers of my secondhand smoke.”

The next step is to change the computer codes in your brain to make yourself actually believe these motivational ideas. Now for a bombshell: Your beliefs have nothing to do with what is real. Instead, your beliefs have everything to do with your perception of reality. In other words, it has a lot to do with the way that you see things.

Our belief systems are located in our subconscious. The subconscious mind is like a computer. Computers do not reason. The input to a computer controls the output from a computer. To demonstrate, I want you to think of something that you already believe without the slightest bit of doubt. Make it a belief that makes you feel good.

For instance, it’s easy for most people to believe that they love their kids. If that is true for you, make a mental image that lets you experience that feeling of love.

I’m going to ask some questions, and there are not any correct or incorrect answers.

Is your mental image a moving picture, or a still?

Is it in color, or in black and white?

Is it close or far?

Is it focused or fuzzy?

Is it normally bright, overly bright, or dim?

Is there a border on it?

Is it borderless?

Is it a panorama?

It does not matter what your answers are write them down. These are the computer codes that your subconscious uses to make you feel your feelings of belief. In this case they are the mental codes for positive belief, because you have chosen a belief that gives you a positive feeling. You have just calibrated your positive belief.

All positive belief pictures are bright and focused. If yours are not, then you probably do not really have total belief. An element of doubt is probably present. So find another belief to calibrate.

If you think of something that you doubt, and you make a mental image of it, one or more of these computer codes will probably be different. Similarly, if you have a belief that gives you a negative feeling, (a negative belief): one or more of those codes will be different.

In NLP we call these particular computer codes visual submodalities.

Now you will need to calibrate a negative belief. So repeat the same exact process, but do so using an idea that you already believe, that makes you feel ghastly.

Once you have calibrated both your positive and your negative beliefs, it’s a simple issue to manipulate what you believe so you can motivate yourself to DECIDE to quit smoking.

So, to summarize, using the above example: “I believe that if I continue to smoke, my secondhand smoke will ruin my kid’s health.”

1. Become aware of how motivated you feel to quit smoking.

2. Make a mental image that illustrates the above belief.

3. Adjust the computer codes (visual submodalities) of the image so that they match the codes from your calibrated negative belief image.

4. If you are right handed, move your eyeballs (and your mental picture) up to your left and hold it there for five seconds. If you are left handed, go up to the right. This will help you to quickly memorize the belief.

5. Now sense how well motivated you feel to quit smoking. Do you feel more motivated? Do you feel less motivated? Or are your feelings the same?

By utilizing this system you can make yourself believe almost anything by making an image in your mind that illustrates your new idea and then adjusting your mental image to make it match your calibrated belief pictures.

And if you have a belief that is holding you back, you can use the same technique to change that belief to doubt by changing one or two of the submodalities and memorizing it that way.

Now that you can motivate yourself to DECIDE to quit, you will quit smoking. A DECISION to quit means: I’m quitting no matter what it takes. If you are similar to most, you will not want quitting to feel painful. The good news is that you will not have to suffer. Because there are several hypnotic and NLP methods that can greatly reduce, or even completely eliminate the discomforts of withdrawal from the cigarette smoking addiction.

The Foremost Nail-Biting Solution Is Hypnotherapy

The underlying causes of most physical habits may be quite varied, and rooted at different psychological levels. Although hypnotherapy has a wide range of uses, the behaviors that are most directly related to physical habits are typically the ones that can be treated with hypnotherapy most immediately and directly. Smoking cessation is the most well known of these, and is one of the most successful and less invasive techniques for reaching its goal. Another common area for hypnotherapy treatment is for weight reduction. Similarly, hypnotherapy is also the best technique for ending a nail biting habit.

The nail biting habit has much in common with smoking. It is a ritualistic, physical habit. Either might be caused by the mechanics of a simple physical routine, or may perhaps be indicative of deeper psychological root causes. And in either case the habit itself can be very effectively halted with hypnotherapy.

Discovering and resolving underlying psychological issues, which are exhibited in nail biting and smoking can be a process that requires numerous sessions with a knowledgeable hypnotherapist. Not all hypnotists and hypnotherapists are capable of working at the deep psychological level. Fortunately, for the purposes of eliminating a smoking or a nail biting habit, they are not required to work below the most direct physical level.

The immediate goal of finding a nail biting cure is far more straightforward. Many of our deeper psychological and emotional states are impacted by our physical state, so in solving the physical symptoms directly, we are also able to have an indirect impact on deeper issues. In addition, not all negative physical behaviors have underlying causes; sometimes it is merely just a physical habit; it just “feels” good for the individual to take part in them.

I have seen that the focused and relaxed state of hypnosis can achieve nearly miraculous results when used in causing simple physical state changes. Whenever I eliminate severe burn pain, remove nausea, and solve other physical symptoms for a client in just a few seconds, it still surprises and amazes me, even though I am supposedly the one with the “power” (although as we know, the true power exists within the client’s unconscious mind). The capabilities exist in each of our minds to block severe pain and nausea; so the ability to prevent one from biting their nails is a modest goal in comparison.

I have found three of the powerful aspects of hypnotherapy to be anchoring, substitution and association. With association, one can link the undesirable behavior to something aversive; with substitution, one can replace the bad habit with an innocuous one; with anchoring, one can connect physical movement triggers with alternative feelings and behaviors.

With association, just like the simple hypnotic phenomenon can make a piece of white bread taste like the most delectable New York Cheesecake to a subject, one can make the feeling and taste of nail biting to be extremely distasteful. If your subject is consistently and repeatedly conditioned that the taste and feel of nail biting is very unpleasant, it will help to cause the habit to cease.

There are chemical products that achieve this goal via foul tasting nail polish. However, with a mental association it is easy to stop nail biting without relying on consistently applying a chemical product. This “aversion” type of therapy generally isn’t very helpful. But it is only reliable when used as an adjunct to eliminating stress that causes one to bite their nails, as well as extinguishing conditioned responses (unconscious associations), which triggers one to bite their nails.

With substitution, it can be effective to replace the nail-biting behavior with a more benign affliction. For instance, it is quite effective to make the suggestion that whenever one feels the impulses that lead them towards nail biting, they will take a deep breath instead, and slowly exhale, achieving all the same feelings and resolution that nail biting used to bring. I have found the deep breathing substitute to be very effective for a wide range of problems.

Similarly, anchoring can be used to subvert one action into another, and works well with association and substitution. It is useful to create the suggestion that each and every time subjects see their fingers coming to their mouth, they vividly remember the unpleasant taste association, and they instead take a deep breath to resolve the tension.

In summary, hypnotherapy has been recognized as one of the most successful methods for negative habit modification. Just as with smoking cessation, the techniques and concepts discussed here prove to be very successful as a long-term nail-biting solution.
